Methodology: how we measure hours to a hole
Shredurance only shows numbers that someone actually published or reported. Every data point links to its source and quotes the text it came from, so you can check it.
In one sentence
We collect published long-term wear tests and skater logs, convert them to hours of actual skating, sort each one by what happened to the shoe (first hole, retired, or still going), and rank shoes by the median hours until the shoe was done.
The unit: hours of skating
Everything is counted in hours on the board, not calendar time. "Lasted 3 months" means nothing without knowing how often someone skated, so we only convert it when the source gives a schedule. For example, "1 hour a day, 5 days a week, for 3 months" becomes about 65 hours. Those points are flagged derived, and the math is shown on the shoe page.
What we count (failure points)
- Done / retired: hours until the source said the shoe was finished, unskateable, or blown through. Only these points feed the leaderboard median.
- First hole: hours when the first hole broke through (usually the ollie area). The shoe may have kept going after that.
- Hole during test: a hole showed up during a fixed-length test, for example Weartested's 10-hour test. Outer-layer-only holes are noted.
- No hole yet: the shoe was still intact after X hours. That only tells us it lasts at least X hours, so it's never ranked as if X were the final number.
Sourcing rules
- Every point needs a public source URL, a date and a quote. If we can't quote it, we don't count it.
- Results from the same tester are counted once (Rippedlaces and SkateboardersHQ share an author).
- Monthly durations without hours are shown on shoe pages but never ranked.
- Skater reports sent through the report form are checked by hand before they're published, and are labelled as community reports.
- Brands can't pay to change a number or a rank. Affiliate links don't affect rankings.
How to read the numbers
- Most models have only one or two sources. A single source is a hint, not a verdict. Each shoe page says when data is thin.
- Grip tape, trick style (lots of kickflips wear out the ollie area), skater weight, and patching with Shoe Goo all change results a lot.
- Rankings will move as more reports come in.
